Brief Program Description
Business plays a main role in the structure and functioning of
contemporary world. Rapid changes in technology, structural
shifts in the economy, resource allocation, changes in consumer
preferences, and global rivalry all require a better understanding
of the role and nature of business in today’s world. This program
provides a well-rounded business education with a focus on
business operations. In addition, students develop an
understanding of the functions of human resources management.
The program will help students develop specific knowledge and
skills required by business professionals with an emphasis on key
people processes that include recruiting, training, performance
management, rewards, labour, and employee relations.

Admission Requirements
- Provide the College with a transcript and a current resume evidencing the student has graduated from Grade 12 (or equivalent) OR
- Provide the College with a current resume evidencing the student has a minimum of five years’ work experience.
- Must complete an Admissions Interview.
- For International students or students whose first language is not English, in addition to the admission requirements listed above, the student must also meet one or more of the following language proficiency requirements:
- Provide evidence the student has completed a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of CBT 240 OR iBT91; OR
- Provide evidence the student has completed an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum score of 6.0 OR
- Provide evidence the student has completed a Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) – General Test with a minimum score of 7.0 OR
- Provide evidence the student has completed a Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) with a minimum score of 780 OR
- Provide evidence the student has completed a Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: the computer-based English test with a minimum score of 46. OR
- Provide evidence the student has successfully completed grade 12 or post-secondary education in an English instructional school system.
- In addition, all International students are required to obtain a valid study visa to complete the Program.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this program the successful student will have
reliably demonstrated the ability to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the theory and practice of
recording financial events for service and merchandising
to prepare financial statements while becoming familiar
with account cycles, cash and receivables, inventory
valuation and special journal and subsidiary ledger use.
Understand the fundamentals of Canadian managerial
principles, methods and skills: organizational structure,
strategy and ops, controlling and leading, and managerial
decision-making.- Demonstrate knowledge of spreadsheet and database
software applications including the design and
management of spreadsheets and workbooks, managing
and analyzing data, macros, queries, reports, relational
databases, and Pivots.
- Demonstrate fundamental understanding of the micro
and macro economic frameworks of the Canadian
economy including supply and demand, economic goals,
monetary policy, fiscal policy, and market structure with
current economic interests incorporated into analysis.
- Demonstrate the concepts involved in marketing
functions in a firm or business community while exploring
tools and techniques used in developing a marketing
strategy.
- Recognize and apply basic financial management
principles relating to financial management goals,
functions and decisions by calculating, preparing,
analyzing, and projecting economic health, financial
leverage, and working capital of a company.
- Demonstrate and understand the fundamentals of
accounting abilities regarding acquisitions, depreciations,
intangible assets, natural resources, goodwill, liabilities
and methods appropriate to mitigate, corporate
transactions, and net income calculation amongst various
partners while accounting for applicable sales taxes.
- Demonstrate and understand the various functions of
human resource management including compensation
and benefits, staffing, recruitment and selection,
research, labor relations, training and development,
health and safety, mediation, influence of government
legislation, and human rights and employment equity.
- Work in a variety of human resource positions and be
able to assume greater levels of responsibility as they
grow in their human resource capability.
- Understand and comply with the employer's legislative
and legal obligations including workplace health and
safety regulation, the Worker's Compensation Act, payroll
compliance legislation, and employment standards.
- Conduct organizational needs assessments, analyze and
modify organizational staff development plans and develop effective recruitment strategies to attract talent that satisfies the organizational objectives.
- Foster a work environment that promotes productivity
and employee satisfaction.
- Evaluate performance and communicate performance
issues in a manner that encourages responsible and
corrective action and manage disciplinary action
proactively and thoroughly.
- Understand the elements of a total compensation
package that align with an organizational recruitment and
retention strategy, develop compensation policies and
procedures, procure benefits, and analyze employee and
organizational pension requirements.
- Evaluate core processes in human resources practices
associated with strategic planning, acquisition and
development, utilization of human resources,
establishment and improvement of labour and employee
relations, and compensation and administration issues.
- Promote the best human resources practices in an
organization.
- Contribute to the monitoring of health and safety in the
workplace.
- Analyze diverse forms of adaptation to a changing
environment and implement change in a logical and
planned way.
- Define implementation strategies for job redesign and
work re-organization.
- Encourage an approach to the practice of human
resource management that is proactive and thoughtful
rather than reactive.
